During your first days in your dorm or apartment, you’ll likely rely on the ever-so-infamous “big light” to illuminate your space. But after a long string of classes when you just want to de-stress, those harsh, fluorescent lights don’t exactly create the most inviting atmosphere for relaxing.

Before you go investing in a clunky floor lamp, you might want to consider a fresher space-saving alternative: Battery-operated wall sconces are the key to bringing aesthetic, ambient lighting into your space. These renter-friendly fixtures are taking over Pinterest boards and TikTok feeds alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. They’re quick to install and have instant impact, setting the perfect mood lighting in your room.

This fall, we expect battery-operated wall sconces to pop up in dorms across the country — after all, they serve as lighting, take up very little space, and are major decor features. From vintage styles to preppy picks and ultra-modern sleek designs, there are increasingly more options as this brilliant generation of lights gains popularity.

How do battery-operated wall sconces work?

Traditionally, wall sconces are decorative light fixtures electrically wired into a wall, meaning they’re out of the question for dorms or rentals. But in recent years, there’s been a new wave of sleek sconces that don’t call for an electrician to install them at all — instead, you either plug them into the wall like a lamp (like these very chic ones from Wooj) or use a USB charger to power up their rechargeable battery.

Some battery-operated wall sconces are heavy-duty enough that they have to be mounted to the wall with screws, but others are lightweight enough (like the inventive Poplights that launched via a Kickstarter campaign in 2023) that all you have to do is peel-and-stick them to the wall with some adhesive or Command strips. For people living in dorms, peel-and-stick battery-operated wall sconces are exactly what you’ll want to invest in. After charging their rechargeable batteries, they’ll be able to run for hours at a time before needing a reup, and many models come with a remote control so you can control them from anywhere in the room.

Use them to illuminate your wall art, put them on either side of your bed as nightlights, stick them beside your desk to make your study area more aesthetic — stick one up wherever you need a little extra light without sacrificing any floor space at all.

The Best Battery-Operated Wall Sconces

Blue Poplight
$99

This punchy wall sconce from Poplight offers up to 9 hours of luminescence per charge (or, you could leave it plugged into the charging cord so you don’t have to worry about running out of light!). It has three different light temperatures — warm, cool, and neutral — so you can switch it up depending on the time of day or whatever suits your dorm’s vibe the best. With its big, round bulb and bold colorways (it comes in eight different colors, from blue and vermillion to marigold and sage green) this wall sconce has a retro, funky look that brings so much personality to even a blank wall. Each Poplight comes with a base, rechargeable battery, USB-C charging cable, and renter-friendly adhesives that allow you to easily attach it to your wall.

EZVALO Picture Light
$37$3019% off

This pair of rectangular gold lights looks like something you might see in a museum, positioned above an old oil painting. These picture lights would go so well with a preppy collegiate style or a vintage-loving dorm filled with thrifted finds. The rechargeable battery lasts up to 30 hours, and the bulbs can adjust to three color temperatures and five brightness levels. Non-renters have the option of installing these using the built-in screw mount, but if you’re in a dorm, you can use the two pieces of double-sided tape that the lights come with.

Pure MDRN Circa Cordless Sconce
$62$50

If you want a wall sconce that really makes a statement, this circular, sun-like option from Urban Outfitters is the one. The terracotta orange version paired with the sculptural, concentric circles design gives off a retro feel, but it comes in four other colors, too: black, white, sand, and coffee. The battery charge lasts up to 12 hours, and you can control the color and brightness of the bulb with a remote, as well as set it on a timer to automatically turn off. The Circa Cordless Sconce has two different mounting options: screw or double-sided tape, making it ideal for any type of living situation.

EZVALO Picture Lights for Wall
$26$2215% off

This set of modern wall sconces is hyper-customizable: It offers 12 different bulb colors, three temperatures, and brightness adjustment features. Plus, you can use the remote control to put the lights on a timer or make them flash quickly between different colors or fade slowly from one color into the next (you can also keep them fixed on one color, of course). While you can mount these little lights with screws, they also come with mounting tape for renter- and dorm-friendly installation. They include a USB-C charging cable, too, and you can charge them back up to their full battery life in 2.5 hours. The black and gold versions are great for minimalist or glam looks, but I especially love the white version for a Y2K aesthetic.

Vimhou Peel and Stick Wall Sconces
$70

You can never go wrong with a traditional lampshade silhouette, and this set of two sconces brings that timeless quality to your room. I love how they look so much like classic wired sconces you’d see in a home, lending a much more permanent feeling to your temporary college housing. For dorm-friendly installation, you can remove the peel from the back of the product to reveal its adhesive side and secure it to your wall by pressing it into place. Among the three finishes (gold, nickel, and black — we’re partial to the gold) and three sizes (12-inch, 13-inch, and 20-inch), there’s a pick in here that’ll fit perfectly in your space, and help you make it a lot cozier without putting holes in your walls.

Rechargeable Gold Wall Sconce
$83$7016% off

This pair of battery-powered lights will make an impact with their sleek design, while still retaining a sense of simplicity that’ll match the rest of your room, no matter the aesthetic. Whether you go with black or gold, you’ll be able to add some mood lighting to your space and a decorative element to your wall all in one go. The iron plate of this sconce comes with an adhesive backing so you can stick it to your wall, and the light piece magnetically attaches to it (amazing for easy charging!). Depending on the brightness level you choose, these lights can stay on for up to 150 hours before needing a recharge. They also come with a remote control that can dim the light and change its temperature.
